Workshops, Workshops, Workshops . . .

I want to announce to everyone I am teaching another 1-day oil painting workshop here in Portland, Oregon this month. The last one was such a success the sponsors want me to do it again. This workshop will focus upon basic techniques and materials for the novice and intermediate oil painter. If you have any questions about oil painting then this is the class for you! (To register, see below.)

Here is the info:

1-Day Workshop:
Essential Oil Techniques:
– with Thomas Jefferson Kitts –

Hosted by
Gamblin Oil Colors and Art Media
at the Oregon Society of Artists
Portland, Oregon

When: Friday, September 17, 2010 | 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Cost: $95.00 + a small materials list

This will be a hands-on workshop, not just a talk and demo! In this six-hour class you will learn how different grounds can affect the paint you put on top, how to work from thin-to-thick and dark-to-light, and the best technique for creating a long-lived work of art. This workshop will provide Gamblin oil paints for your use and additional art materials as well. If you've ever wondered how to craft an oil painting from start to finish then this is the class for you!

Thomas Jefferson Kitts has over 25 years of experience of both painting and teaching. Widely known for his plein air work, Thomas also paints the figure and still life from direct observation. This past summer, Thomas was juried into five prestigious plein air invitationals, and taught a week-long plein air workshop in the Portland area. (You can read about it here: http://tinyurl.com/tjk-testimonials ) Thomas is an active member of Oil Painters of America and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.

Put me on the list to notify for the January session, please. I have something on the 17th I can't switch but would really like to join this workshop.

No problem, Mary. Hope to see you in the Winter class.

This sounds like a great workshop, but I can't make it. Have you thought about putting this on video or DVD? Another income stream for you and much needed training for artists.

Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe someday, but right now I'm not that big on DVD instruction offerings.

Having the ability to talk back and forth between the teacher and student, and a chance to rephrase things, is invaluable in painting instruction. At least I believe this is so after more than 10 years of teaching.

But maybe someday, if I think there is a missing resource I can fill in.
